Mrs Ball's
There is a fascinating story behind the enormous success of Mrs Ball's Chutney, the chutney that put South Africa on the world's culinary map.
Surprisingly, the story begins in Canada. In 1852, Captain Adkins and his wife travelled from Canada to Australia. On the way, they stopped in South Africa and eventually settled there. Mrs Adkins made her chutney using an old Canadian family recipe, which she later passed on to her daughter Amelia.
Amelia married Mr Ball and moved to Cape Town, where she initially made chutney for family and friends. Its growing popularity led to steadily increased and more professional production. Today Mrs Ball's Chutney is sold worldwide and has become an iconic South African brand.
